A beloved dance festival between city and harbor
We look forward to welcoming you to Copenhagen Summer Dance, 2023 – one of Copenhagen’s great summer traditions at Ofelia Plads. The program will once again be packed with world-class dance and exciting new initiatives such as dance films under the night sky, free activities such as Gaga training and yoga, and drinks at the bar. The event is Denmark’s largest contemporary dance festival with visiting dancers and choreographers from Ukraine, Canada and the USA, who will ensure the audience a broad and intense program they will never forget.
PROGRAM
MY QUEIT HOME by David C. Price and Holstebro Dance Company
‘My Quiet Home’ is created together with Ukrainian dancers, who in the spring of 2022 had to flee their homes after the Russian attack. Holstebro Dansekompagni helped them out of the country and process the inner struggle of people on the run, through the universal language of the body. The horrors of flight and war will thus be an essential message to remind the audience of, which sadly is still likely to be relevant this summer. The performance will be a premiere of a special version.
PASSING BY by Justin Rapaport and Danish Dance Theater
In 2020, Danish Dance Theater was part of the jury for the Copenhagen International Choreography Competition and wishes to present the winner of the Danish Dance Theatre Award 2020, Justin Rapaport with the duet ‘Passing by’. Rapaport recreates his beautiful duet about a meeting, originally created for two male dancers, for Danish Dance Theatre’s dancers in several versions for two male and two female dancers. We look forward to presenting a repremiere of this poetic piece at this year’s dance festival.
THE WATCHERS by Dorotea Saykaly & Danish Dance Theater
Danish Dance Theater presents a new work, especially designed for the outdoor performances and created as an ensemble work for the entire company. For this we have commissioned the up-and-coming choreographer Dorotea Saykaly, who has created works for companies Ballet BC as the Inaugural recipient of the Emily Molnar Emerging Choreographer Award, Ballet Edmonton and the youth company of TERRITORIO V. With an impressive career as a dancer with Compagnie Marie Chouinard, the GöteborgsOperan Danskompani, Ina Christel Johannessen and Sidi Larbi Cherkoui, she has quickly established herself as a strong choreographic name and has created powerful works, often diving into a sci-fi renaissance approach to storytelling, showing the fragility and beauty of humanity. By being able to offer a world premiere of a brand new work, we ensure that the festival and the new theatre season can open with a true highlight.
Free dance movies – ‘Dance on Film’
Repeating the success of last year, we are once again screening eight, short dance films under the black night sky. An ideal backdrop for these unique, very moving films that you will love to experience. The films are curated by dansefilm.dk by Maia Elisabeth Sørensen and Helle Pagter and take place after the performances on Thursday and Friday at 22:15. The program lasts about one hour. Dress warmly, as the harbor pier is cold after sunset. Admission is free.
Free yoga classes with Lisbeth Moseholm
Take a deep breath and experience the magic! Join us for a very special yoga class under the open sky at Ofelia Plads with a lot of participants guided by the experienced yoga teacher, Lisbeth Moseholm. Lisbeth has been teaching yoga full-time since 2013. Participation is free and for everyone, but will require registration. Further info to come. The class will take place on Saturday, July 8th at Ofelia Plads from 10-11 am. Read more at moseholmyoga.com. OBS: Bring your own yoga mat.
