Alessandro Sousa Pereira receives prestigious travel scholarship

Danish Dance Theatre’s dancer Alessandro Sousa Pereira receives the Neel Resling Halpern travel grant. This is only the second time that a modern dancer is the recipient of this prestigious award.

Fifteen years ago, Mike Halpern created the Neel Resling Halpern Foundation in memory of his Danish wife and her work with Danish ballet in both the United States and Denmark.

This year, the foundation will hold a large-scale fundraising event in Bellevue Theatre on Sunday the 28th of October at 4:30 pm. The daughters Lisa and Michelle will present 2 scholarships in the amount of 30.000 Danish kroner to Alessandro Sousa Pereira of Danish Dance Theatre and Ida Praetorius from the Royal Theatre. They will each perform a solo, respectively by Tim Rushton and Bournonville.

Alessandro, born in Brazil, started as a dancer with Danish Dance Theatre in July 2007. He has created several award-winning pieces and in 2011 received the Reumert Talent Award for his choreography, Crossing Silence. In 2011, Alessandro also received a travel scholarship from Ballet Master Albert Gaubier Foundation.

This is only the second time that a recipient has their roots in contemporary dance. In 2006, Kenneth Carlson, who was a dancer with Danish Dance Theatre at that time, also received the Neel Resling Halpern Memorial Scholarship.

Congratulations to Alessandro Sousa Pereira!
