Shadowland

Lyrics and music from the beat generation inspired Tim Rushton to capture a third dimension of the experience of dance: a dimension where every art form is equal. As words, music and dance fuse into a free flow of impressions, the audience experiences an intense and magical universe where ironic, yet sincere fragments of daily life’s banalities and paradoxes are exposed.

Like a choreographic Speakers Corner, each of the performance’s five scenes stands for its own mood and its own earnest, playful or intense point of view.

From Sydney to Montréal, Rushton’s Shadowland has been acclaimed by audiences. With its clear choreographic structure, interacting with the luscious words from original recordings of 60’s beat-poets, Tim Rushton and video designer Signe Krogh, have created a unique space in which the dancers move through abstract, pure dance as well as gestural, more narrative elements.

Shadowland is based on the beat generation’s poetry with Allen Ginsberg’s legendary holy! holy! at the centre.

Shadowland was originally created for two female dancers (Shadowland I) but is also presented in a version for 6 dancers (Shadowland II).
Shadowland I was premiered in October 2001.
Shadowland II in September 2002.
